Q4 & ANNUAL 2025 INDIA SOLAR MARKET UPDATE – HISTORIC YEAR FOR INDIA'S SOLAR MARKET WITH 36.6 GW ADDED

India added 36.6 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in calendar year 2025, up nearly 43% compared to 25.6 GW in 2024, according to the Q4 & Annual 2025 India Solar Market Update Report by Mercom India Research.

The year marked record installations, surpassing annual capacity additions of all previous years. Annual installations crossed the 30 GW mark for the first time.

India’s cumulative installed solar capacity stood at nearly 136 GW as of December 2025.

Large-scale solar accounted for nearly 81% of capacity commissioned in 2025, while rooftop solar contributed over 19%.

In 2025, 29.5 GW of large-scale solar capacity was installed, a 31% increase from 22.5 GW in 2024. Open access projects alone represented 26% of large-scale additions. Record commissioning levels were driven by supportive policies, accelerated project execution, and favorable market conditions.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra led large-scale solar installations in 2025, accounting for around 34%, 28%, and 15% of the capacity additions, respectively.

Large-scale solar installations totaled 7.6 GW in Q4 2025, a 12% increase quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) compared to 6.8 GW in Q3 2025, and up over 11% year-over-year (YoY) compared to 6.9 GW in Q4 2024.

In Q4 2025, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh led large-scale solar additions, accounting for approximately 41%, 25%, and 10% of installations, respectively.

Solar Installations by Quarter

India added 57 GW of new power capacity, with solar power contributing 68% of these additions in 2025.

As of December 2025, India’s cumulative installed solar capacity stood at nearly 136 GW, with large-scale solar projects accounting for almost 85% and rooftop solar for about 15%.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka topped cumulative large-scale solar installed capacity, accounting for 30%, 19%, and 12%, respectively.

In 2025, nearly 44 GW of large-scale solar project tenders were announced, a 45% decline compared to 79.5 GW in 2024. Meanwhile, 20.9 GW of projects were auctioned during the year, down 57% YoY compared to 48.1 GW
